October 12, 2010

Minsk, Belarus, 1870 – Johannesburg, South Africa, 1945
“We remained apart and seperate, spoke our own dialect and lived in our own world.”

Jehudo Epstein is well know for his fine drawings and paintings. Although he didn´t know German, Epstein left Belarus to study art in Vienna in 1888 where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He is regarded as one of the most important Jewish painters. He created idealized realistic images from Jewish daily life, biblical scenes, genre scenes, portraits of personalities of the society and landscapes, usually in a relatively dark color palette. Epstein traveled all over Europe and the Israel to paint his Jewish subjects. He immigrated to South Africa in 1935 to escape German persecution.
