Joseph Israels

July 11, 2010

Groningen, Holland, 1824 – La Haye, Holland, 1911

Joseph Israels´ mother wanted him to be a Rabbi while his father wished that he would become a banker but Israels´ obvious talent could not be denied. He studied at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Art and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Israels initially painted historical scenes but finding that unsuccessful he developed the Realism style that he is now famous for. His depictions of village people and fishermen are poignant and sober, true to the hardships of the life.
