Hershl Ben Haim

July 5, 2010

Kalimontov, Poland, 1930 –
“This is the town where goats would climb up the roofs with meditating tenderness- this
was my shtetl.” – Hershl Ben Haim

Born Zvi Caspi in a small town in Poland, Hershl Ben Haim changed his name when he immigrated to Israel in 1945. A talented singer, musician and conductor, he is as well known for his musical talents as he is for his paintings. Ben Haim moved from his town when he was only eleven years old to the big city of Odessa. The artist remembers his childhood fondly and paints colorful scenes of shtel life as well as despair over its destruction. Ben Haim´s paintings preserve the traditions and nostalgia of Eastern European Jewry.
